No way! Athena too!
| Isis, or Athena? On a wire outside home. |
I haven’t seen the Odyssey yet, but after one of our high school English students told about seeing it the other night I decided to read it again and…
No way!
Athena too!
How did I miss that?
Seeing swallows always carries my mind off to the mythical palace where Isis transformed into a swallow and flew mournfully around the pillar that held her dead, yet to be resurrected husband, Osiris.
Watching them dart through the sky catapults me into the Mystery every time because of that tale.
So back to the Odyssey, I was completely immersed in The Battle for Ithaca, reading of Odysseus and his son Telemachus battling the cruel suitors when:
“Athene flew across them in the shape of a swallow and filled them with a surge of energy, a new life that saw them through the battle to victory.”
No Way! The swallow is Athena too!
So from now swallows are even more fascinating.
Fascinating and heartening.
I absolutely love reading of heroes ridding important places of cruel, vindictive people who are only there for personal earthly gain. And in every story Nature always sides with the most courageous, honest, and honorable. It only becomes accessible to those humble and compassionate enough to recognize others as Thou.
.
Now all of you who've been staying up late night after night wondering which two goddesses transformed into swallows,
now you know.

During the heyday of Athens, some 200-300 years after the Oddersy was first transcribed, Athena was envisioned as an owl. They still have coins of her in that shape.
